Change
So in our cutlery drawer we have one long slot that houses both the dessert spoons and salad forks. Typically, the spoons live at the front, the forks at the back. A few days ago I changed that, with the logic that we use the forks much more often that the spoons. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but in reality this tiny change has thrown my routine completely out of whack. Crazy, I know, but true.
The thing is that change is hard. However minute, however miniscule. Every change you make in your life has an unimaginable and irrevocable impact on it.
These past few months have been real evidence of that for me. The small change of going to youth group has thrown me completely out of whack (or, more accurately, into whack). It's not been completely easy (convincing my parents to drive me to and from the mount two more times per week....), but I really truly love it.
This morning some of us from youth group (plus Rich and some other parishioners) stood out on the street corner with anti-abortion and pro-life signs for an hour and a half and prayed. It was incredible. Before I joined youth group, I might have looked at a group like ours this morning and thought them a bit odd. But the changes of these past few months have included a perspective change. I look at everything differently now.
"The key to change is to let go of fear," Someone great once said. With God we have no reason to fear. The Bible tells us "do not be afraid" three-hundred-and-sixty-six times!!!!!! In life, we continue to change constantly, and sometimes that scares us more than we could ever cope with. But with God, we have no reason to fear change. With God, change is always for the better.
Change may be hard, but with God, it is easy. Change may be huge, but with God we can live simply. Change may be scary, but with God we have no reason to fear.
